Transportation Supervisor of Light Rail Operations: Phoenix, AZ

ACI is seeking responsible, initiative-taking individuals interested in pursuing a career in the transit industry. We have openings in our Valley Metro streetcar and light rail operations for Transportation Supervisors. Job responsibilities include monitoring passenger train operations from the Operations Control Center and the field.

Valley Metro Rail is a 28.2-mile (38 stations) light rail line serving the cities of Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa in Arizona. The network, which is part of the Valley Metro public transit system, began operations on December 27, 2008. Since its opening, the system has undergone four expansions, including the recent opening of the Tempe Streetcar, which is 3-mile (14 stops) system.

Hourly Wage Range: $22.00 to $32.26 per Hour, commensurate with relevant experience

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervising safe train operations to ensure on-time reliable passenger rail service on the Phoenix Valley Metro and Tempe Streetcar services.
  • Serving as a liaison between Alternate Concepts Inc. (ACI) Rail Operations and Valley Metro Light Rail to ensure proper information flow about the quality of service and safety of customers.
  • Monitoring light Rail and streetcar movements according to schedule, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and prescribed operating plans to ensure passenger safety and quality service.
  • Ensuring that notifications are made in accordance with Valley Metro and ACI policies.
  • Emphasizing safety and rules compliance are paramount when communicating instructions to operations personnel.
  • Ensuring that all operators and other employees working on the light rail and streetcar right-of-way are advised on any unusual incidents, accidents, personnel, and trespassers.
  • Ability to learn and attain proficiency with the Operations Control Center software systems for train control, train tracking, traction power, and facilities equipment.
  • Effectively communicate with a wide range of personnel involved in day-to-day operations including operators, supervisors, maintenance worker, security personnel as well as First Responders and emergency personnel.
  • Initiating proper service recovery procedures required to minimize any negative impact on customer service.
  • Receiving, responding to, and logging fault conditions, alarms, and alerts, from fare collection, security, escalators, electrical power, and surveillance systems.
  • Accurately completing log entries concerning service. maintenance, or unusual incidents.
  • Ability to learn and comply with the National Incident Management System (NIMS) procedures during emergencies.
  • Ability to remain calm and effectively communicate with personnel in a respectful and professional tone at all times.
  • Maintain records of train movements and exception procedures. Accurately and completely document exception to scheduled train movement. Create, save, and print reports pertaining to the efficiency of systems for operations and maintenance.
  • Work any shifts and/or locations as assigned or directed.
  • Respond to inquiries, whether from a co-worker, customer, agency personnel or contractor, in a timely, professional, and courteous manner.
  • Adhere to the rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable) and polices of ACI including the EEO, Anti-discrimination, Anti-harassment and Anti-retaliation polices.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform these jobs responsibly individuals must have strong communication skills, sound judgement, and an ability to remain calm during stressful circumstances. Experience in transportation and other safety sensitive industries are preferred. The requirements listed below are representative of the specific knowledge, skills, and/or qualifications.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a four-year accredited college or university is preferred. Five (5) years of relevant work experience is strongly preferred. A college degree may be substituted for commensurate years of assessed relevant work experience.

Experience in transport dispatch, emergency dispatch, air traffic control, or the military is favorable and may be substituted for college experience.

Language Skills

Ability to speak, read and write English in a work setting. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to author routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts including but not limited to proficiency in adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing all units of measure. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Ability to compute ratio, rates, percentages and able to draw and interpret graphs and tabular data sets.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must successfully complete train operations training program and Train Operator recertification annually. Possession of a valid driver’s license and a valid DOT certification and any other certificates, licenses and registrations as required by law to perform the specified functions
